The shot VS The moment

Over labor day weekend I traveled to chicago with a friend and fellow photographer. We explored the city and talked endlessly about the past and present. One subject in particular struck me and still plays over in my head. As a photographer when do you put down the camera and just be in the moment? My mind is constantly constructing shots. Wanting to reach for my camera so I can forever remember the way his shirt complimented the wall of wine in the background during brunch. Or the way light falls through the window in my living room. Or even the way my grandmother’s hands move when she talks about baking. But in adoring and obsessing over these moments I’m taken out of the actual experience. Not to mention you’re never in the moments you’re capturing. Weeks and months later you have tons of pictures but you’re not in a single shot. Having the memories means the world to me but is that more important than giving whomever I’m with my undivided attention? But as a photographer what happens when you don’t have any images to look back on? Disappointment and a feeling of lose surely ensue when there isn’t much to “show”. Maybe this is one of those conflicting feelings that never goes away. Lately I’ve walked away from parties, dinners and trips with a full heart but very few images. The memories will always make me smile but I can’t help but wish I’d taken more photos. BUT I can say I’m living in the moment more often than not. And I’m ok with that…..

Bakers & Baldwin

I’ve been getting a lot of people asking me where I purchased my hat and shoes in my facebook profile. Got the wedged sneakers from Bakers and the hat from Baldwin. Bakers Shoes and Baldwin Denim are two companies that I adore. When I do shop outside of thrift stores I tend to go lurking at these stores. Both companies are Missouri based (Bakers>STL / Baldwin>KC) which I love

I’ve shopped bakers for years not knowing they were run out of my home state. All of their shoes are fun and a lil funky which is right up my alley. Plus have you taken a close look at those silver wedge sneakers in the pic below? My heart jumped when I spotted those. I’ve had a silver shoe obsession since middle school so I had to snag these. They are perfect when I’m out shooting live shows. Baldwin Denim is a new brand to me. And although it’s mens wear I can’t help but love everything that they produce. My next boyfriend is sure to get spoiled with goodies from this store. Have you seen their latest promo video? You can just smell the manly goodness as you watch. Ugh, I’m a sucker for a well dressed man. Next time you guys shoot a video holla at your girl to take some behind the scenes photos lol.

What are some of your favorite places to shop. Let me know in the comments!

My name’s Keyonna and I’m a Thrift Store Junky

I’ll admit I wasn’t into it at first. Never really been the shopping kind. Especially when it involved me rummaging through racks and racks of clothes. I was the chick sitting in the corner checking the time, rolling my eyes urging my friends to leave. The first couple of times I went thrifting I was overwhelmed. Intimidated even. It took me a good 3 trips to really jump in.

Since moving back to the midwest I’ve been cutting down on my spending all the way around. This is something I can do for fun and still snag some great one of a kind pieces. I feel like the clothes I purchase have soul in a sense. And don’t get me started on the jewelry. I can’t get enough. $60 typically gets me 15-20 items depending on what I’m getting. Seriously what can you get at the mall for $60? A pair of jeans, shoes or 2 shirts? Mmhhmm, yeah see. I’m a thrift store junky now. The best thing about it is that my personal style has totally evolved into something I feel is completely me. I love it. Here’s a couple items I snagged about a month ago. This time around I got one “expensive” item so I didn’t stock up but I loooove every piece.

“Attitude is everything” mug $2 /  Wood lips $3/  Red fringe boots $20/

Linda Rondstadt vinyl record $1/  Silver sequin dress $4= $30

Do you thrift? What are some of your favorite items you’ve snagged over the years. Send me some pics I wanna see what you got!

Not sure what to call this post

It’s 3 am in the midwest. This is actually an early night for me if you’re familiar with my sleeping patterns. (Shout out to all the semi insomniacs out there.) I couldn’t sleep so I decided to blog. So I’m sitting here alone in silence in my birthday suite typing away. Was that too much? Don’t really care, it’s that type of blog and I’m that type of girl. I’ve decided if I’m gonna continue having a blog I need to A.) stop being paranoid about it. B.) Use it and C.) Be honest. So here we go……..

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen I’m Keyonna Renea. I love taking beautiful photographs. They’ll range anywhere from family portraits to local and underground hip hop artists. I have a unique set of friends and clients. That’s what sets me apart. I’ll be here rambling on about one thing or another if you’ll be there to listen (or eeerrr read). Deal? K. Lets go!
